The Maltese is a well known lap dog that was used almost exclusively by nobility and aristocracy for many centuries. This breed is now quite wide spread thanks to its cheerful character and its amazing long silky beautiful coat. Despite its small size and hairy coat that makes it look like a wig this breed is very strong and healthy. Wary of strangers, intelligent, lively and happy the Maltese makes for a great companion or family dog. Enjoys playing with children and adapts well to the pressures of family life. This dog has an incredible ability to learn the habits and behaviors of those it lives with and react accordingly, making it seem almost as if it has a complete understanding of its masters.
Exercise: As long as you take care to protect the Maltese from the rain and cold it needs not more than a daily walk to keep fit. If in good health this breed also enjoys long walks in the open spaces of the outdoors.
Specialized care: The long silky white coat of the Maltese needs constant and professional care to keep it looking nice. Take extra special care of the coat when your dog is shedding its puppy coat and getting its adult look.
